Location
It
is the only coastal town in the five making up the valley; it is
bounded by Amoroto, Berriatu and Lekeitio. The centre of Mendexa,
though, is not by the sea but in the interior, at the top of a hill.
It has been there since it was built in the Middle Ages. The town
is divided into four neighbourhoods: Iturreta, Leagi, Likona and
Zelaia. Some are in the seaside, and some at a hilltop. The town
has a total area of 6,69 Km².
There
are few people living in Mendexa. Nevertheless, according to the
last Census, the population has grown in the last few years; this
is because some inhabitants of Lekeitio could not afford to buy
a house there and moved to Mendexa. The town has magnificent views:
the sea and the hills meet in this area. The only beach in the Lea
Valley, Karraspio, is also there.
